David Soul Tribute
For the past 15 years I've contributed to the Faces of Death project (aka F.O.D). Despite its morbid name, F.O.D is a celebration of cultural, creative and/or interesting souls that have left us in the past year. This year I got David Soul, aka Hutch from the 70’s TV show Starsky & Hutch.
I was around 10-13 years old when Starsky & Hutch was on the air. That era was a golden age of TV, especially for a kid into Hot Wheels and slot cars. Shows and movies like Smokey and the Bandit, CHiPs, The Dukes of Hazzard, Six Million Dollar Man, and Knight Rider—which came a bit later—were all about cool vehicles, action, and larger-than-life heroes.
Obviously, the red Gran Torino that Starsky and Hutch raced around in is an absolute classic! Though Hutch rarely got to drive, I love that his car was a beater. They were a seemingly mismatched pair of misfits that made a great team.
In looking into his history, it was odd to find out that he used to perform as the Covered Man wearing a black leotard with a face mask! That deserves another portrait.
