It's been wild seeing everyone remembering the old days of Williamsburg on Facebook after seeing the New York Times article about the gentrification of Williamsburg, I moved to Bedford ave in '95, but had been visiting friends there for a few years (that's where all my Pratt friends were!) Most people know me for my art director skills, but my background is in illustration.
Here's a series that I did back in 2002, they are based on my photos of the Maspeth tanks in East Williamsburg. I had been documenting them for a few years before they were imploded in 2001, I was taken by the fact that you could see them from almost everywhere in Williamsburg and have many photos of them from around the neighborhood (this was pre-camera phone and were shot on film.)
They are a mix of analog and digital, I project the photos and trace them with a sharpie. Then I scan the drawing and convert it to a vector file and add the color in Adobe Illustrator. Inspired by Japanese woodcuts.
