North Brooklyn Community Boathouse Logo design

The North Brooklyn Community Boathouse is a great local group in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. I recently designed the new logo for them, here’s the story of how it evolved

The Story Behind our New Logo

North Brooklyn Community Boathouse has grown up over the last couple of years, tasked with figuring out revenue streams to stay afloat, creating fundraising strategies, getting proper email addresses, a new website, and recently…a logo.

Some of you may think… “don’t we have a logo?” But in the history of the organization, NBCB has never had a logo. In 2012, Brooklyn artist Duke Riley generously donated a custom illustration, but the image of two aristocrats sailing along the Newtown Creek was a design appropriate for t-shirts and marketing, not necessarily a logo.

So, in 2022, founding member Dewey Thompson started thinking about logo designs and how images and text should represent all the aspects of NBCB – community, advocacy, boating, and the environment.

A couple attempts were made by outside designers, but they lacked a familiarity with the organization, and their ideas didn’t quite hit the mark. To get a logo that truly reflected NBCB and its environment, it was decided that members and residents would be the best candidates for the job. So, an open call was made through a mass email and social media looking for designs.

The response from the public was astonishing. It was truly heartwarming to have received so much interest from members and non-members who simply wanted to give back and donate to NBCB’s cause. The submissions were comprehensive and impressive, some you may see on t-shirts or other boathouse merchandise in the future.

To be impartial, the submissions were anonymously presented to a logo committee that included NBCB’s co-presidents. A short-list was made and sent to board members for a final decision.

The process of choosing a logo turned out to be a good exercise, making the committee and board think about what NBCB is as an organization. Initially, the guidelines were to incorporate the Pulaski Bridge, or images that reflected Greenpoint and its surroundings. But everyone soon realized that was asking too much of the logo. Another realization was that designs featuring boats or paddles failed to represent the full spectrum of NBCB, its advocacy, education, community building, and ecology. So, a clean, text only logo was chosen. The board believed this simple design had the power to say a lot.

Done in all lower-case letters, NBCB’s new logo is playful, whimsical, and unassuming. The font reminded board members of work by E.E. Cummings and bell hooks. It’s also formal and professional, without being stuffy.

The logo was designed by Brooklyn-based graphic designer and artist Chris Smith (aka subtexture). You can see more of his work on his design website chrismithdesign.com.

A graduate from Pratt Institute in the ‘80s, he’s been a fixture in Greenpoint for over 25-years. Chris started out making band flyers and designed record covers for GG Allin, Johnny Thunders, Television, the Dickies, and countless bands you’ve never heard. Now he runs his own creative studio working with non-profits, vineyards, beverage brands, and small businesses. He also works as an art director at some of the biggest and/or most nimble ad agencies in New York.

Chris specializes in branding and promotions and has left his mark on the local scene, working closely with cherished Greenpoint establishments such as the Lobster Joint, The Mark Bar, Brooklyn Ale House, and Papacito’s. Notably, he recently crafted the logo for Anathea Simpkin’s election campaign. Additionally, he’s designed a line of Greenpoint-themed t-shirts inspired by classic punk rock icons.

Beyond his design work, Chris is deeply engaged in the arts community as both an artist and curator. For over two decades, he orchestrated art shows throughout Greenpoint, partnering with organizations like GoGreen Brooklyn, Greenpoint Gallery Night, and the Northside Alliance, as well as participating in events like Greenpoint Open Studios, and Bushwick Open Studios. His art has appeared on multiple television shows, including Saturday Night Live, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Law & Order SVU, and Elementary.

Chris fondly recalls the vibrant atmosphere of NBCB’s past parties, the BBQs, events, and live music that took place at our site before construction. He admits he hasn’t gotten on the water as much as he’d like.

I’m sure we can help him with that!

Masbeth Tanks illustrations

It's been wild seeing everyone remembering the old days of Williamsburg on Facebook after seeing the New York Times article about the gentrification of Williamsburg, I moved to Bedford ave in '95, but had been visiting friends there for a few years (that's where all my Pratt friends were!) Most people know me for my art director skills, but my background is in illustration.

Here's a series that I did back in 2002, they are based on my photos of the Maspeth tanks in East Williamsburg. I had been documenting them for a few years before they were imploded in 2001, I was taken by the fact that you could see them from almost everywhere in Williamsburg and have many photos of them from around the neighborhood (this was pre-camera phone and were shot on film.)

They are a mix of analog and digital, I project the photos and trace them with a sharpie. Then I scan the drawing and convert it to a vector file and add the color in Adobe Illustrator. Inspired by Japanese woodcuts.

Musicians art show at Brouwerij Lane

I realized that I haven’t had a solo show in a few years!

Please join me at Brouwerij Lane this Thursday, October 20th at 6pm.
l’ll be showing my musician pieces which I’ve been working on the past couple years. I’ve been making some larger pieces and the tall walls at Brouwerij are a perfect place to show them.

Please come by and enjoy some great beers and check out the art. The show will be up for a month

Opening Thursday October, 20th 6-9pm
Brouwerij Lane
78 Greenpoint ave.
Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

About the work
I've been going out and drawing live music in Brooklyn for many years at places like Troost and Pete’s Candy Store. I make small sketchbooks that fit in my back pocket and draw loose line drawings, mostly in the dark, so I really don't see the drawing until later. I then take those small drawings as starting points for larger pieces on canvas, wood panels and paper.

RCR Farms - Sustainably Sourced Mayhem!

The Rental Car Rally is pretty hard to decribe, so I’ll just cut n’ paste from the “WTF” section on the website

”In 2007, two oddballs in Brooklyn named Supreme and Pants wanted to go on a road trip. Neither of them had a car. Neither of them had a license. The only logical thing to do was to get other people to drive them, and also get them to pay for it. Rental Car Rally was born. Enlisting the aid of their old friend and drunken wizard named Mustache, they created a rolling carnival of costumed humans who they led on an overnight journey to uniquely odd roadside attractions like a nudist bookstore run by America’s first male exotic dancer, abandoned hotels, amusement parks overgrown with graffiti and weeds, secret desert communities, and deserted military bases lost to time. Things got weird.”

I went on the first reconnaissance mission to Montreal in 2007 and was asked to design a logo for this insane event. I looked at all of the rental car agency logos past and present and stole some ideas, tossed in some flames for good measure and there you go.

Flash forward to 2021 and Supreme got in touch and said that this year things were gonna get even weirder!
Now there’s a wrestling belt that goes to the winning team. And they wanted to do custom egg cartons (egg-throwing is a big part of the competition) So I revisited the original logo and replace the car with a gap-toothed tractor. I also did a shirt design with a bad ass rat-rod tractor being driven by a defiant blonde.

Ham Sandwich - Group Show at AHA Fine Art

I'm in a group show called Ham Sandwich and it's about food, this piece from 2012 seems fitting.

AHA Fine Art Gallery in Bushwick,

56 Bogart Street, Suite 109 Brooklyn, NY

Exhibition on View: Fri., November 19th through Sun., December 12th, 2021.

Opening Reception: Friday, November 19th, 6 - 9pm

________________

A Ham Sandwich is a common “non-snob” food made up of the basics, typically bread and meat. It can be prepared with multiple condiments in endless arrangements, depending on the consumer's taste buds.

Ham Sandwich examines how contemporary artists use food as a means to address issues of politics, history and culture as well as how food can reveal views, passions, assumptions and personalities.

Food is necessary for survival, yet its overall significance transcends the everyday need by acting as an integral part of our communities. Food is as an intermediary, connecting us with others through school lunches, work, holiday meals, parties, dates and more.

For this exhibition, we welcome work that explores contemporary aspects of food culture such as globalization, imperialism, consumerism as well as depictions of food that may reveal allegories for certain virtues or values.

WE PAINT AS WE DREAM, ALONE

REFLECTIONS ON MUSIC, CARS & POP CULTURE FROM:

MONTE ANTRIM * MARK ALBRIGHT * JASON MITCHELL * CHRIS SMITH

Please join us for a group show of 4 artists who've lived in the same vicinity and have gotten drunk at the same bars for 20-odd years.

They haven't always known each other, but they've breathed the same air and drank the same water. We can't say that they see the world the same way, but there is a similar sensibility in the way that they work.

They all draw from life, collaging and working out ideas in spiral bound sketchbooks, homemade notebooks, and blackbooks held together with hot glue and duct tape.

This show has them getting out of the books and up on the walls. Enjoy!

Radiator Residency update

The last 2 weeks in the studio have been great! I’ve been trying to get over here everyday (but skipped a couple of those heat wave days)

Doing a bunch of musician pieces abd slowly working on the Ratrods. I need to remind myself that it’s not a race, I don’t need to finish anything. That said, these are all works in progress.
